Despite the increasing number of elderly people requiring the opening of an online bank account, Italy remains at the end of the European list for the use of e-banking services.
The phenomenon numbers? Only 31% of Italian citizen against 52% of the European average with a growing gap during the last ten years.
It’s possible to track an average Italian user identikit: he’s a man, he’s graduated and lives in some big Northern city. What about the others? Why the internet banking is not popular in Italy despite the huge diffusion of electronic devices and the fact that it’s the safest way to save tens of euros on commissions?
It might be because Italians still looks for personal contact, because they’re not used to new technologies or simply because it’s different?
It’s not easy to formulate a definite answer, but the fact remains: nobody, or almost, in Italy uses the services offered by bank on the web.
If we look at the data of 2017, only 31% of Italians used the online web channel for payments, transfers or checks on their online bank account. The gap with the European average, which is 52%, is enormous. In fact, Italy is just ahead Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Romania.
Guide countries are instead those of North Europe: Denmark is the first one (90% of the population uses online banking services), followed by the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden.
We can analyse the possible causes: factors that certainly influence education, population density, technological barriers, age and gender. As for education, in other EU countries, the subjects with low schooling who use e-banking are 25%, while in Italy they stop at 12%. On the other hand, in the European area, among those with high qualifications, the spread of e-banking is 77% but falls to 61% in Italy.
Talking about the difference between genders, in Europe, men use online banking more than women: 54% against 50%. However, numbers are very different and amplified in Italy: women who use e-banking are only 26% against 36% of male population.
